What Causes Pimples

The process by which a pimple develops is exceedingly complex. What we know is that a pore collapses on itself and blocks the sebaceous gland. People with acne are particularly receptive to a hormone called Testosterone; this hormone is found in both men and women.

The hormone Testosterone in people who are prone to acne starts the sebaceous glands producing oil (sebum). There is dead skin in the openings of the hair follicles (the tubes holding the hair) and it is not shedding properly and has clogged the follicles. This is what causes blackheads and whiteheads to form.

For some people, their acne does not progress beyond this stage, but for others the build-up of oil in the hair follicles creates an ideal environment for a bacterium called Propionibacterium to grow.

The bacteria lives innocuously on your skin, but when the situation is right, it grows. It thrives on the sebum and causes your body’s immune system to kick in. This damages the skin and causes the redness associated with pimples.

In severe cases, cysts develop beneath the skin. These acne cysts may rupture; if they do they can spread the infection into nearby skin tissue. This can result in scarring.

Some of the suspected causes of acne may be hormones, bad diet, the gene’s you inherited from your family, lack of vitamins, or stress. And it may be a mix of these factors.

Now that you know some of the things that causes pimples, here are some things you can do to make it WORSE on yourself:

o Picking and squeezing the spots causes inflammation and scarring. Everybody does it, don’t be everybody!

o Stress can make acne worse. Clam down.

o Hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle of women. I can’t help you with that one.

You will NOT have acne if you:

o Eat chocolate. That’s good, I like chocolate.

o Don’t wash your face, but if you don’t wash your skin, bacteria will be able to multiply. Remember that Propionibacterium?

So what kind of treatments?
Start by keeping the area clean. Wash the affected area a couple of times per day. Don’t use a strong soap, and be gentle with it. Your skin needs a little of its natural oil to keep it in condition,

Over-the-counter remedies:
Look for antibacterial topical’s such as benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide, dry’s out the skin and helps it shed the layers of dead skin. This makes it harder for pores to become blocked; it also helps prevent farther infections.

Nothing will work immediately, its going to take some time. Give it a couple of weeks to see any improvement. If not, you’ll need to see a doctor.

A final word
I’m sorry to report, but nothing will completely cure acne. So you need to try and prevent new spots from forming, and recover from those already present. Your main goal is to prevent scarring. If you’re not having any luck with your home treatments, go see a dermatologist.
